Sarit Hadad![]() Sarit Hadad, one of Israels most popular mizrachi singers, even performed in Amsterdam. Sarit Hadad was born as Sara Hodedtov on 20 September 1978 in Hadera. The is the youngest of a family with four boys and four girls, who are all into music. When she was only eight years old she already performed in clubs as a 'wunderkind', playing classical music on the piano. Her parents didn't know about this; Sarit was caught out when she performed at a talent scouting evening in her town and the local papers spotted her. That was the end of that: her parents forbade any further performances. Those were not lost years though, for she taught herself to play many instruments. At fifteen she joined the Hadera Youth Band. This was her first step towards a career as a solo singer, for she met her present manager there who convinced her parents that her music should be encouraged, not forbidden. She became well known under her artists name Sarit Hadad and produced many solo albums, all of which score high in Israel. In 2002 was chosen to represent Israel at the Eurovision Songfestival with the song Light a Candle, written by the same pair that produced Diva for the controversial Dana International act at the festival in 1988. But even Sarit's song provoked some controversy, because some found it 'improper' that an Israeli artist should sing a song of peace (!). Not for the first time, some called for Israel to be disqualified. That didn't happen; she came out twelfth. Sarit has performed many times in Israel, Europe and the US; she is or was even quite popular in Israel's neighbouring Jordania with her mizrachi sound. Instruments she plays include drums, guitar and accordeon and besides Hebrew, she sings in French, English, Arabic, Georgean, Caucasian and Turkish. |
