A whiff of AmsterdamThe real atmosphere of Amsterdam, her streets, people and café's caught in original sketches and aquarels: it's doable, art doesn't have to be expensive and souvenirs needn't be kitsch. Malie Baehr pictures her wanderings for Amsterdammers abroad, visitors and inhabitants. A tree has roots, a Jew, feet still has a lot of truth in it, but Amsterdam will always be Mokum Alef
From het studio in the heart of the city she wanders around her neighbourhood, captering what strikes her in quick sketches that she later works out in ink and aquarel. These sketches form the basis for her wonderful oil paintings. The light, the characteristic pose of a woman or a group of people lounging on a terrace; all those things you don't consciously notice but that give the city its unique atmosphere. Malie Baehr does notice them, and for her they are more important than details. For those who can't afford one of her paintings (yet) a single sketch will do the trick. Or alternatively, putting this different medium to good use, you can add a little extra to that one image with a series. Make your own lay-out to fit the space where you'll hang them or have Malie arrange them to form one living image in a bigger passe partout - or have them in a changeable frame. What you see here is by no means everything and some of it may even be sold already. The ever changing collection is here , for sale - or just to view and enjoy. The whiff of Amsterdam on offer here is very affordable, yet these are not reproductions but original works in ink and aquarel. There is only one of each, so series may vary as the artists adds new sketches or when someone whisks away a single image from under your nose. |
